Outerspace: Cute Robo-Arm Pet ![]() Outerspace is a cool little project developed at the Berlin University of the Arts to explore concepts of curiosity and human interaction. As the creators describe the project:
Curiosity is desire. The desire to discover something. The movements of
Outerspace are based on its curiosity in exploring the surrounding
space. It looks for light, motion, finally contact. As he finds
something interesting, this again increases its curiosity, to find out
even more. The same thing happens in the mind of the observer, when he
approaches the object. |

New Augmented Reality Stuff on the Way ![]() After decades of mice, gamepads, and joysticks as input devices, there seems to be a movement afoot to commercialize some truly nifty new interface methods and technologies. The success of the PlayStation 2 EyeToy helped demonstrate that people will actually use their bodies to interact with games on a mass scale and now developers are looking at improving the technology to allow better head tracking, Minority Report-style gestural interfaces, and even augmented reality games where gaming characters are combined with with real-life settings brought in via a video camera. Nintendo's been hinting at "revolutionary" new technology for their new gaming console (probably not out until '06), but if you want to see some truly mindblowing stuff today, check out this video on Gear Live of D'Fusion's new technology that seamlessly meshes computer-generated objects with real-world settings.
